| Abstract: | Discusses options for winter glacier travel with EN 892 standard ropes: single, half (for double rope technique), and twinned. Illustrates usage and discusses recommendations of European manufacturers and guides. Both French main manufacturers offer 8-mm twinned rope explicitly for glacier use, with single-strand use tolerated for glacier travel. Edelrid and Mammut provide half ropes for simple glacier use. Concludes that single-strand half rope (8.3 mm or thicker) offers sufficient protection for general glacier use (unlike twin rope used similarly). Contact with rock demands double strand use. Recommends 30-50 m rope length. Stresses importance of correct usage over rope choice; always rope up when glacier snow cover is thin, soft or fresh, in crevasse zones or poor visibility, or without skis. |
