Record #199196:

Science, environment, and sovereignty: the International Geophysical Year in the Antarctic Peninsula region / Adrian Howkins.

Title: Science, environment, and sovereignty: the International Geophysical Year in the Antarctic Peninsula region / Adrian Howkins.
Author(s): Howkins, Adrian.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: New York: Palgrave Macmillan
In: Globalizing polar science : reconsidering the International Polar and Geophysical Years. (2010.),
Abstract: Examines role of scientific research during 1957-58 IGY in contested Antarctic Peninsula region in resolving sovereignty dispute between Great Britain, Argentina and Chile. Suggests that improved understanding of Antarctic environment and realisation that it contained little or nothing of immediate economic value was crucial in convincing politicians and officials in Britain and United States to favour limited internationalization of continent. This was achieved by exploiting "goodwill" generated by cooperation during IGY, in which Argentina and Chile found themselves swept up, and resulted in signing of Antarctic Treaty, which was considered favourable to all participating countries.
