Interpretations of polar bear (Ursus maritimus) tracks by Inuit hunters: inter-rater reliability and inferences concerning accuracy / P.B.Y. Wong, and 5 others.
Title: | Interpretations of polar bear (Ursus maritimus) tracks by Inuit hunters: inter-rater reliability and inferences concerning accuracy / P.B.Y. Wong, and 5 others. |
Author(s): | Wong, P. B. Y. |
Date: | 2011. |
In: | Canadian Field-Naturalist. (2011.), Vol. 125(2) (2011) |
Abstract: | Argues that, owing to tracking experience in pursuing polar bears (Ursus maritimus), Inuit hunters could provide non-invasive estimates of polar bear characteristics from tracks, and polar bear monitoring programmes could benefit from Inuit input. Determines inter-rater reliability of estimates of sex, age and size of polar bears, and estimates of age of tracks, made by group of nine Inuit hunters who interpreted 78 tracks. Also explores relationship between hunting experience and ability to interpret tracks. |
