Abstract: Discusses migration issues within wider context of socio-economic wellbeing of northern populations, with aim of unveiling broad picture of interrelationships between socio-economic conditions and migration patterns. Examines in detail migration crisis which has grown since collapse of Soviet Union which resulted in hardships such as increase in cost of living and unemployment. Develops integrated socio-economic wellbeing index which is used to compare regions. Includes preliminary empirical analysis of relationship between economic wellbeing and migration.
