Abstract: Examines relations between central government, Communist Party and local authorities in Sakha Republic with particular reference to Sakha people (Yakuty). Explores role of remote Tattinskiy Ulus in forming modern Sakha identity. Author's family came from this district and she discusses her father's (Ivan Aleksandrovich Argunov) thesis that ethnic intelligentsia were erroneously accused of bourgeois nationalism. Examines also pre-Revolutionary and early-Soviet period, and development of Sakha literature in late 1920s. Explores impact of perestroika and glasnost' with particular reference to students' demonstration in April 1986 which was labelled by authorities as "nationalist riot". Based on fieldwork in 1995-96 in Yakutsk and Taatta.
