Record #198026:

Social mobility of the creoles in Russian America / A.V. Grinev.

Title: Social mobility of the creoles in Russian America / A.V. Grinev.
Author(s): Grinev, A. V.
Date: 2011.
In: Alaska History. (2011.), Vol. 26(2) (2011)
Abstract: Discusses emergence of Creole class as separate social group when Russian-American Company (RAC) was organised in Alaska in 1799. Creoles were descendants of relationships and marriages of immigrants from Old World (Russians. Scandinavians, Yakuts and others) with native women. RAC was interested in placing Creoles as professional workers, because of shortage of workers in colonies and considerable expense in transporting specialists from Old World and ultimately returning them to their homes. Professions in colonies were limited by size and needs of economy, which was based on procuring and trading furs.
