Abstract: Models the flow of meltwater with extremely high ion concentration that occurs during early melting of snowpack, as ions move from solid ice to liquid water during partial freeze-thaw cycle. Describes melting of samples of natural and artificial snow under controlled conditions, and centrifuging to analyze liquid water and remaining snowpack. Reports in all cases continuous decrease of chloride concentration in solids with melting time, with most of chloride ion eluted to liquid water in first six hours. Changes in chloride concentration in liquid water showed no tendency. Formulates non-dimensional decline rate of chloride concentration in solid ice during melting as function of decline rate of solid ice water equivalent.
