Abstract: Estimates winter precipitation, based on assumed relationship between Na⁺ concentration in snow and mixing height of convective layer, i.e., high concentration in snow of materials with sea-water origin under winter monsoon conditions. Also requires that concentration of anthropogenic acidic materials in snow be high under low-pressure conditions of Pacific coast/Japan Sea. Extracts nine characteristic layers from 399 cm-deep snow cover, finding three to have precipitated and formed under winter monsoon pressure conditions, and six under low-pressure conditions. Identifies precipitation dates for all layers from meteorological records and calculates snow water equivalent for eight periods for two layers. Finds correlation with precipitation records high in northwest and lower in southeast.
