Abstract: Reports experiment examining relationship between electrostatic charge accumulated on blowing snow particles and frequency of particle collision with snow surface. Uses spherical and dendritical snow particles in cryogenic wind tunnel at temperatures in range -20 to -5°C, with fetch of 12 m and frequency of collision with hard snow surface controlled by wind speed in range 4.5 to 7 m/s. Finds that blowing snow particles tend to accumulate negative charge with increase of collision frequency, and demonstrates that this effect is responsible for differences between previously reported field observations and wind tunnel experiments.
