Abstract: | Analyzes theory and practice of formation and application of artificial firn-ice massifs. Produced by spray-cone freezing, massifs are up to 10-15 m thick, with mineralization 5-10 times lower than that of initial water. Analyzes demineralization using theoretical computations and laboratory experiments. Argues that massifs may be used to solve many ecological problems: prevention of pollution of natural waters in regions with sub-zero winter air temperatures; desalinization of salty lakes; and regulation of lake salinity regimes, e.g. Also identifies potential use in cooling systems of various enterprises, for environmental protection from thermal pollution and for power production. |
