Abstract: Examines dendrochronological Northern Hemisphere temperature record over last 2000 years. Identifies fluctuations on time scales of 4-5, 25-35, and 100-140 years, and compares with Antarctic ice core sulphate records. Associates fluctuations on 4-5 year scale with irregular events such as ENSO, and those on decadal and century scales with periods of powerful volcanic eruptions, attributing 30-60% of global temperature variation to these. Argues that since paleoclimatic data suggest that single eruptions can influence near-surface temperatures for only 2-4 years, only a series of explosive eruptions distributed over 5-6 years could induce detectable global climate change, such as Little Ice Age. Notes potential global effect of "supervolcanic eruption", in which huge aerosol mass injected immediately into stratosphere initiates "volcanic winter".
