Abstract: | Presents 1999-2008 study of snow cover and avalanches on northern slope of Aibga Range (800-2,200 m a.s.l.). Distinguishes four snowpack types: 1) induced by intensive snowfalls and predominantly destructive metamorphism; 2) induced by formation of snow slabs under influence of blizzards and lying on weakened horizons in a stage of constructive metamorphism; 3) induced by accumulation of wet snow and regressive metamporphism; 4) induced by formation of stratified snow thickness with ice crusts and weak horizons. Avalanches come from crest of Aigba Range via collapse of snow cornice (up to 10-12 m) and stop in bottom corries, increasing snow thickness there and creating avalanches much bigger in volume. Damp spring avalanches promote formation of wet snow/debris flows. |
