Метаморфизм снега и формирование снежных лавин в районе Красной Поляны (Западный Кавказ)

Title: Метаморфизм снега и формирование снежных лавин в районе Красной Поляны (Западный Кавказ)
Title, transliterated: Metamorfizm snega i formirovanie snezhnykh lavin v raĭone Krasnoĭ Poli︠a︡ny (Zapadnyĭ Kavkaz) / N.A. Volodicheva, and 3 others.
Translated title: Snow metamorphism and snow avalanche formation in area of Krasnaya Polyana (West Caucasus).
Author(s): Volodicheva, N. A.
Date: 2011.
Language: Russian.
In: Led i Sneg. (2011.), Vol. 2(114) (2011)
Abstract: Presents 1999-2008 study of snow cover and avalanches on northern slope of Aibga Range (800-2,200 m a.s.l.). Distinguishes four snowpack types: 1) induced by intensive snowfalls and predominantly destructive metamorphism; 2) induced by formation of snow slabs under influence of blizzards and lying on weakened horizons in a stage of constructive metamorphism; 3) induced by accumulation of wet snow and regressive metamporphism; 4) induced by formation of stratified snow thickness with ice crusts and weak horizons. Avalanches come from crest of Aigba Range via collapse of snow cornice (up to 10-12 m) and stop in bottom corries, increasing snow thickness there and creating avalanches much bigger in volume. Damp spring avalanches promote formation of wet snow/debris flows.
