Abstract: Describes development of Sho-setsu (snow melting) pipe system first installed in Nagaoka in 1961. System uses heat energy of groundwater pumped from drop well and sprinkled through numerous nozzles over wide area of road surface. Covering mainly Hokuriku district, where risk of sprinkled water freezing on road is low. Describes 50-year history of system, including improvement of nozzles for easier maintenance, and development of control systems for economy of groundwater, aimed at preventing land subsidence and groundwater exhaustion. Describes how continuing land subsidence has, especially in areas of thick soft stratum, necessitates further improvement of economy of Sho-setsu pipe system.
