Abstract: Describes technique for determining dry snow grain size from optical observations, based on analyzing snow reflectance in near-infrared region, particularly Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) band at 865 nm, and also MODIS 1240 nm band. Describes snow reflectance model, validation and numerical sensitivity study. Describes algorithm for retrieving effective grain size, and validation using MODIS data and simultaneous ground measurements over flat snow on lake ice in Hokkaido, Japan. Also applies algorithm to MERIS data from Greenland. Finds bands located at 1020 and 1240 nm most suitable for snow grain size remote sensing applications.
