Record #197916:

Comparing the performance of fuzzy and crisp classifiers on remotely sensed images: a case of snow classification / Monica Pepe, and 3 others.

Title: Comparing the performance of fuzzy and crisp classifiers on remotely sensed images: a case of snow classification / Monica Pepe, and 3 others.
Author(s): Pepe, Monica.
Date: 2010.
In: International Journal of Remote Sensing. (2010.), Vol. 31(23-24) (2010)
Abstract: Evaluates widely used classifiers, particularly accuracy benefit offered by soft classifiers, using study sites in Amadello glacier group (Italian Alps) and Innsbruck area (Austrian Alps). Compares snow cover maps obtained from moderate resolution MODIS data by different classifiers and validates them using fine-resolution ASTER data. Also considers two hard classifier algorithms: one supervised (maximum likelihood); and one unsupervised (Normalized Difference Snow Index). Soft classifier considered is fuzzy statistical classifier. Develops assessment methodology combining generalized cross tabulation matrix for both crisp and fuzzy classifications and Pareto boundary. Establishes rigorous framework for comparing crisp and fuzzy classification results, while determining analytically, based on presence of mixed pixels in validation data, maximum accuracy achievable by crisp classifiers.
