Record #197911:

A regional inventory of rock glaciers and ice-cored moraines in Norway / Karianne S. Lilleøren, Bernd Etzelmüller.

Title: A regional inventory of rock glaciers and ice-cored moraines in Norway / Karianne S. Lilleøren, Bernd Etzelmüller.

Etzelmüller, Bernd.
Date: 2011.
In: Geografiska Annaler. Series A. Physical Geography. (2011.), Vol. 93(3) (2011)
Abstract: Uses maps and aerial imagery to classify 307 permafrost landforms as intact (active/inactive) or relict and by origin. Discusses importance of permafrost and ground thermal regime for late Pleistocene and Holocene landscape development and suggests landform distribution as proxy for present/former permafrost existence. Examines elevation, slope and aspect in relation to mean annual air temperature as parameters for permafrost landforms, and evaluates in relation to current geomorphological activity. Permafrost landforms exist in northern Norway down to sea level, with majority relict talus-derived rock glaciers. In southern Norway they are restricted to high elevations, with majority active and connected to glacial activity. Interprets contrast as reflecting different ages and climatic regimes of formation. Inventory reproduces modelled permafrost distribution satisfactorily. Attributes scarcity of rock glaciers to reasons of topography, bedrock competence and debris availability.
