Perturbation of climatic response at maritime glaciers? / Stefan Winkler, Atle Nesje.

Title: Perturbation of climatic response at maritime glaciers? / Stefan Winkler, Atle Nesje.
Author(s): Winkler, Stefan.
Nesje, Atle.
Date: 2010.
In: Erdkunde. (2010.), Vol. 63(3) (2010)
Abstract: Analyzes mass-balance and length-variation data from maritime mountain glaciers in Norway. Challenges some frequent assumptions regarding relationship between climate data and glacier terminus response, especially representativeness of long-term average data, constant terminus reaction times, and coupling of net mass-balance data with length changes. Discusses possibility of "regime shift" in mass-balance drivers and virtual absence of frontal reaction time due to perturbation of dynamic response of glacier tongue c. AD 2000. Argues that above-average summer air temperatures caused most recent retreat, but without clear link to mass balance data. Stresses contribution of high winter precipitation during late 20th century, arguing that "annual air temperature" parameter cannot explain glacier length variations.
