Abstract: Notes how cold and humid climate allows High Vosges mountains to retain long-lasting snow cover despite relatively low elevation. Using data from 1934-2008, presents detailed inventory of 40 sites (23 firn sites and 17 cornice sites) identified in glacial cirques as favourable to formation and long duration of snow patches. Analyzes topographical and climatic features of firn and snow cornice development. Identifies atmospheric circulation types associated with years of low and high snow depth. Describes and maps avalanche risk in Hohneck Massif, depending on characteristics of snow cover and meteorological features.
