Abstract: Proposes non-destructive method for measuring diffuse attenuation coefficient (Kd) of snow, based on measurement of backscattered upwelling light from artificial source above snow cover (method helps to solve problem of snow cover disturbance during measurement). Describes Monte Carlo model of measurement system. Model runs made for different sized grains show that method produces higher values of (Kd) than methods using vertical profiles of downwelling irradiance. Coincidence is better for larger grains. Describes pilot study in Kilpisjärvi, northern Finland, in which attenuation coefficients obtained for dry snow show at visible wavelengths agreed reasonably with those from more traditional methods, but were much lower in infrared.
