Record #197900:

Ionic budget of winter snow on Vestfonna Ice Cap, Svalbard / Emilie Beaudon.

Title: Ionic budget of winter snow on Vestfonna Ice Cap, Svalbard / Emilie Beaudon.
Author(s): Beaudon, Emilie.
Date: 2010.
In: Arktisen keskuksen tiedotteita = Arctic Centre Reports. (2010.), Vol. 54 (2010)
Abstract: Describes study of ionic concentrations in snow pit samples taken from two principal summits of ice cap in 2007. Investigates saline peak in winter snowpack on Summit Ahlmann that indicates greater marine ionic contribution in comparison to Summit 95 and enrichment by sea salt fractionated in sodium and sulphate. Discounts association with warm air or frequent super-cooled fog events resulting from open water off coasts and freezing temperatures at summit altitude. Proposes instead that frost flowers, possibly formed in Hinlopen Strait, are main source of observed airborne sea salt liquid particle loads in snow. Discusses fractionated sea salt in ice cores as potential proxy for past winter sea ice production/extent.
