Abstract: | Discusses outcome of workshops held during 2007-2008 International Polar Year to establish how Arctic observing and data management activities could be coordinated and sustained over long term. Four recommendations emerged: Arctic Council should lead facilitation of international collaboration among government agencies, researchers and northern residents; governments of Arctic Council member states should commit to sustain current level of observing activities, and create means to make data freely, openly and easily accessible; Arctic states should increase intergovernmental cooperation in coordinating observing systems; and Arctic Council member states should welcome non-Arctic states as partners in international cooperation. |
