Indirect growth curves remain the best choice for lichenometry: evidence from directly measured growth rates from Svalbard / Steven Roof, Al Werner.
Title: | Indirect growth curves remain the best choice for lichenometry: evidence from directly measured growth rates from Svalbard / Steven Roof, Al Werner. |
Author(s): | Roof, Steven. Werner, Al. |
Date: | 2011. |
In: | Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research. (2011.), Vol. 43(4) (2011) |
Abstract: | Presents directly measured growth rates from two lichens from Svalbard made over two-decade interval (1984-2007). Determines growth rates by measuring change in area of lichen thalli from digital images and converting area to diameter. Directly measured growth rate results are consistent with other recently directly measured lichen growth studies, but are not consistent with indirectly determined age-size curves that show negative correlation between size and growth rate (i.e. rapid "great growth" followed by shorter "linear growth"). Suggests reasons for apparent discrepancy between directly measured and indirectly determined growth rates. |
