Record #197717:

Landscape variation in the diet and productivity of reindeer in Alaska based on stable isotope analyses / Gregory L. Finstad, Knut Kielland.

Title: Landscape variation in the diet and productivity of reindeer in Alaska based on stable isotope analyses / Gregory L. Finstad, Knut Kielland.
Author(s): Finstad, Gregory L.
Kielland, Knut.
Date: 2011.
In: Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research. (2011.), Vol. 43(4) (2011)
Abstract: Reports use of values of δ¹⁵N in cast antlers of reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) to track fluxes of N through grazing ecosystem that can be manipulated by humans. Demonstrates that ¹⁵N natural abundance of reindeer forages varies significantly and that δ¹⁵N value of collagen deposited in antler bone from spring until ossification correlates significantly with δ¹⁵N signature of diet. Also demonstrates that calf weight in June is related to isotopic signatures in antler and soft tissue of adult females, and is inversely correlated with absolute differential between summer and winter serum δ¹⁵N values.
