Considers role of missionary journals, annual collection of gifts for missions and, more specifically, role of philanthropist Jean-Louis Micheli and members of Église évangélique de Genève. Demonstrates that interaction between these varied elements have been instrumental in development of numerous scientific fields, in particular meteorology, climatology and phonology.
