Record #197521:

Radio frequency identification tags for grizzly and polar bear research / Lori T. Quakenbush, Richard Shideler, Geoff York.

Title: Radio frequency identification tags for grizzly and polar bear research / Lori T. Quakenbush, Richard Shideler, Geoff York.
Author(s): Quakenbush, Lori T.
Shideler, Richard.
York, Geoff.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Fairbanks, AK: University of Alaska Fairbanks, Coastal Marine Institute
Abstract: Reports project to test feasibility of using radio-frequency identification (RFID) system in grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) and polar bear (U. maritimus) research and management, by modifying tags so they could be attached to bears' ears and by modifying reader and antenna system for use in aircraft and land vehicles. Finds that, although RFID signal exceeds expectations, tag retention, especially for grizzly bear females with dependent young, is major limitation.
