Record #197492:

Swedish polar policies from the first International Polar Year to the present / Lisbeth Lewander.

Title: Swedish polar policies from the first International Polar Year to the present / Lisbeth Lewander.
Author(s): Lewander, Lisbeth.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: New York: Palgrave Macmillan
In: Globalizing polar science : reconsidering the International Polar and Geophysical Years. (2010.),
Abstract: Discusses Sweden's seemingly official disinterest in polar politics, from earliest International Polar Year to most recent of 2007-08. Notes that, while there were particular Swedish policies connected to each IPY, it was not always evident who actually formulated or promulgated them. Swedish policies were, in general, non-interventionist but cautious. Scientific quest remained principal argument for Swedish presence in both Arctic and Antarctic, later complemented by frequent and highly visible concern for global environment. There were, however, other generally tacit foreign-policy and security concerns that have existed since late 19th century.
