Includes chapters on 1912 Swedish proposal for cooperative scientific research; history of Discovery Committee and British loss of sovereignty over Antarctic whales with advent of pelagic whaling; Norwegian whaling magnate Lars Christensen's whaling and scientific research expedition of 1920s; inter-war culture of polar exploration centred on Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge; Swedish geographer Hans Ahlmann's Arctic expeditions of 1930s; organization of Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1949-52; and effect of decline of Empire and start of Cold War in 1950s on increased importance of international agreements and use of science as means of territorial engagement.
