| Abstract: | Presents re-examination of solid polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) layers as observed by lidar and balloon-borne optical particle counter (OPC) on 17 December 1995. Determines typical radius of solid particles in observed PSC to have been 2.3 μm. Backward trajectory analysis for air mass in which solid particles were observed shows that air mass had experienced temperatures 2-3 K below frost point of nitric acid tri-hydrate during four days preceding observations. Backward trajectory analysis traces air mass back to northern Greenland and Ellesmere Island on 16 December, one day before observations. |
