Record #197402:

Contemporary mature forest cover does not explain the persistence of capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) lekking areas in Finland / Saija Sirkiä, and 6 others.

Title: Contemporary mature forest cover does not explain the persistence of capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) lekking areas in Finland / Saija Sirkiä, and 6 others.
Author(s): Sirkiä, Saija.
Date: 2011.
In: Ornis Fennica. (2011.), Vol. 88(4) (2011)
Abstract: Investigates persistence of capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) lekking areas in relation to mature forest cover at three study areas in Finland (south-western, central and northern). Inspects total of 381 leks twice at intervals of 10-30 years and classifies as either "persisting" or "vacated". Finds no significant trends between mature-forest cover and lekking-area persistence in any study area. Suggests that, in present-day Finland, area covered by mature forest is too scarce to explain lekking-area persistence of capercaillie.
