Abstract: Describes development of clearly articulated scientific programme for 2007-2008 International Polar Year (IPY), and dedicated mobilised constituency of several thousand activists (scientists, science managers, educators and interested media specialists). Achievements during period also included smooth merger of IPY planning by World Meteorological Organization and International Council for Science, and organisation of IPY programme around trans-disciplinary science themes.
