Abstract: | Provides overviews of origin and implementation of preceding International Polar Years (1882-1883, 1932-1933, and 1957-1958 International Geophysical Year). Historical context improves understanding of why international science community was mobilised three times for large trans-disciplinary initiatives in polar regions prior to IPY 2007-2008, and elucidates factors critical to successful planning and implementation. |
