Abstract: | Official account of Lt. Nobu Shirase's 1910-12 Antarctic expedition aboard Kainan-maru. Expedition spent austral winter 1911 in Sydney after reaching Ross Sea but failing to land during first voyage. During second voyage exploration parties were landed at Bay of Whales and in King Edward VII Land, and Capt. Naokichi Nomura achieved farthest east in Ross Sea. Includes scientific appendices, with details of Ainu dog sledging method and fundraising activities in Japan. Translators provide historical background to expedition, and biographical notes. |
