Record #197028:

Temporal variations of Antarctic blue ice extent: a possible mass balance indicator / Jaehyung Yu.

Title: Temporal variations of Antarctic blue ice extent: a possible mass balance indicator / Jaehyung Yu.
Author(s): Yu, Jaehyung.
Date: 2011.
In: Polar Record. (2011.), Vol. 47(243) (2011)
Abstract: Uses Landsat TM/ETM+ images and radar altimetry-based elevation change data to investigate 33 blue ice areas (BIAs) distributed over both East and West Antarctica, to determine whether temporal variations in extent of BIAs are related to surface mass balance. Also analyses topographic parameters of BIA occurrence such as elevation, slope and proximity of nunataks to identify favourable BIA settings for climate change studies. Results indicate probable systematic linkage between temporal variations in extent of BIAs and changes of surface elevation for those at high elevations, close to nearby nunataks, and experiencing expansion.
