Abstract: Examination of historical circumstances leading to Alaskan Native solidarity movement in 1960s which, through development of Native organisations, led to 1971 Alaskan Native Claims Settlement Act. Article outlines racist and segregationist policies of expanding Anglo-American population following missionary and economic colonisation and considers further serious threats to indigenous land rights arising from adverse legislation concerning hunting and trapping, nuclear testing and discovery of oil. Alaska Native Brotherhood, founded in 1912, was lone Native political organisation until 1960s, when Iñupiat and Athabascan peoples took action to support indigenous rights.
