Abstract: Historical overview of effects of European colonisation, which were, chiefly, resource exploitation and development of Christian missions. Attempts by nineteenth and early twentieth century missionaries to eradicate traditional culture and beliefs have now been reversed, following popular protest and improvements resulting from 1971 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.
