| Abstract: | Examines historical background to 1916 referendum in which Alaskans votes by approx. two-thirds margin to "go dry". Argues that vote can be seen as apex of fervent, even evangelical, "Progressive Era" determination to enhance community well-being by ridding frontier of evils related to alcohol abuse, especially vice associated with saloons. |
