| Abstract: | Uses recently acquired data for Rutford and Evans ice streams flowing into Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, West Antarctica, to provide first experimental confirmation for theoretical prediction that fast-flowing ice streams transmit information about their bedrock topography to surface, and shows that fast-flowing ice is highly transparent to bedrock irregularities with wavelengths between 1 and 20 ice thickness. Includes discussion of basal sliding law in statistical inversion methods, and concludes that, since correct form of sliding law is still disputed, use of inversion methods to obtain unambiguous information about ice stream bed remains problematic. |
