| Abstract: | Examines sediment plumes as proxies for meltwater runoff from ice sheet outlets (onset, duration and variability), by extending techniques applied previously to Sondre Stromfjord (noting more complex configurations of majority of meltwater outlets along west Greenland coast). Seeks robust and reliable quantification based on proxy, without recourse to field campaigns to identify local factors, aiming to develop automated plume quantification system based on daily satellite imagery. Examines 36 meltwater outlets for plume area variability during 2000-07 and links between plume area and ice sheet melt using daily melt extent product for Greenland. Assesses how sediment plumes reflect annual, seasonal and daily variations in ice sheet runoff and examines latitudinal variations in plume behaviour. |
