Abstract: Examines examples of re-vitalization of nature in traditional cultures in modern times. Argues for continuity in human tendency to regard nature not just as material, but also supernatural entity, despite scientific and technological progress. Observes transformation of animism into philosophy of ecology among various indigenous peoples (including Sakha, Khanty, and Ainu). Suggests ecological philosophy that has developed in West is animism in modern dress.
