| Abstract: | Describes observation of weak layers of depth hoar, graupel and rime-free crystals during two winter seasons in Sapporo, Japan, and measurement of time variations of shear frame index (SFI). Reports that shear strength of weak layers of depth hoar and graupel remained low, in contrast to that of rime-free crystals. Thickness of depth hoar remained unchanged for entire month. Attributes low shear strength of depth hoar to low compressibility. |
