Record #196302:

Physical properties and formation of flutes at a polythermal valley glacier: Midre Lovénbreen, Svalbard / Sam Roberson, and 3 others.

Title: Physical properties and formation of flutes at a polythermal valley glacier: Midre Lovénbreen, Svalbard / Sam Roberson, and 3 others.
Author(s): Roberson, Sam.
Date: 2011.
In: Geografiska Annaler. Series A. Physical Geography. (2011.), Vol. 93(2) (2011)
Abstract: Investigates physical properties of flutes widespread across glacier forefield, focusing on setting, morphology, sedimentology, and isotopic composition. Compares with properties of adjacent debris-rich basal ice, subglacial till and proglacial till. Proposes flute formation by squeezing of till into basal cavities associated with boulders beneath warm-based ice in glacier interior. Localized freeze-on of flute sediments occurs within cavities due to either (i) "heat pump" effect operating across boulder, leading to development of cold patch within cavity, and/or (ii) cavity length fluctuations caused by slip-stick glacier motion. Describes how ice flow transports frozen flute sediment away from boulder, allowing cavity to remain open and flute to propagate downflow.
