Record #196297:

Insights into subglacial processes inferred from the micromorphological analyses of complex diamicton stratigraphy near Illmensee-Lichtenegg, Höchsten, Germany / John Menzies, Dietrich Ellwanger.

Title: Insights into subglacial processes inferred from the micromorphological analyses of complex diamicton stratigraphy near Illmensee-Lichtenegg, Höchsten, Germany / John Menzies, Dietrich Ellwanger.
Author(s): Menzies, John.
Ellwanger, Dietrich.
Date: 2011.
In: Boreas. (2011.), Vol. 40(2) (2011)
Abstract: Investigates 30-m-high section of Pleistocene sediments for information on conditions beneath Rhine Glacier outlet of Alpine ice sheet. Exposure extends from upper cemented sand and gravel (Deckenshotter) into diamictic units extending down to weathered Molasse bedrock. Macrosedimentology reveals diamicton subfacies units and strong uni-direction of ice motion based on clast fabrics. Micromorphological thin-section analyses reveal microstructural strain and depositional markers, indicating subglacial environment of ongoing soft bed deformation in which diamictons are readily identified as subglacial tills, and distinct changes in pore-water pressure and sediment rheology detected. Changes reveal fluctuating conditions of progressive, non-pervasive deformation associated with rapid changes in effective stress and shear strain leading to till emplacement.
