Record #196273:

Recent sea ice ecosystem in the Arctic Ocean / Igor A. Melnikov.

Title: Recent sea ice ecosystem in the Arctic Ocean / Igor A. Melnikov.
Author(s): Melnikov, Igor A.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Dordrecht: Springer
In: Influence of climate change on the changing Arctic and sub-Arctic conditions. (2009.),
Abstract: Examines responses of sea ice ecosystem to global warming, focusing on physical-chemical properties of sea ice and sea water in contact with it, and species composition and structure of biological communities. Compares data obtained from North Pole stations during 1970s (particularly NP-22) with data from SHEBA expedition of 1997-98 and expeditions of last decade, during which intensive sea ice melting and ecosystem degradation were observed. Discusses different habitats and coenoses of multiyear and seasonal sea ice, and connects absence at SHEBA of many algal species, and virtually all interstitial fauna, found at NP-22 with decline of perennial ice. Anticipates that as seasonal ice replaces perennial ice cover, communities will increasingly resemble those of Antarctic.
