Record #196270:

Snow characteristics in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica / Eija Kanto.

Title: Snow characteristics in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica / Eija Kanto.
Author(s): Kanto, Eija.
Date: 2006.
In: University of Helsinki. Department of Geophysics. Report Series in Geophysics. (2006.), Vol. 49 (2006)
Abstract: Examines spatial and temporal variations in physical and chemical character of surface snow and accumulation rates, using data collected along 350-km transect from coast to plateau during years 1999-2004. Finds distance from sea predominant factor controlling variations in physical (conductivity, grain size, δ¹⁸O and accumulation) and chemical snow properties, with local influences of nunataks and topographic highs also visible. Notes wide variations at single sites, due to redistribution by wind and sastrugi topography. Reports mean accumulation rate of 312 ± 28, 215 ± 43, and 92 ± 25 mm w.e. per year from ice shelf, coast region and plateau. Describes depth hoar layers usually found beneath thin ice crust and associated with low dielectric constant and high nitrate content.
