Record #196266:

The orographic climate factors contributing to the mass balance of small glaciers in North Iceland / Kaisa Halkola.

Title: The orographic climate factors contributing to the mass balance of small glaciers in North Iceland / Kaisa Halkola.
Author(s): Halkola, Kaisa.
Date: 2005.
In: University of Helsinki. Department of Geophysics. Report Series in Geophysics. (2005.), Vol. 50 (2005)
Abstract: Analyzes observations of snow accumulation during winter 2002-03 from four small cirque glaciers (Kambsjökull, Glúfurárjökull, Hálsjökull and Baegisaŕrjökull) in context of previous mass balance estimates, degree-day mass-balance model MBT, and atmospheric model MM5. Particularly examines effect of wind on accumulation. Notes excess of accumulation in MM5 simulation over observations on Kambsjökull. Calculates wind-related mass transfer processes (accumulation/erosion and sublimation) on snow surface, but notes difficulty of estimating wind on high glaciers from lowland weather stations. Attributes wide variation in accumulation gradient with altitude to redistribution by wind. Concludes that glaciers are supported by higher precipitation than previously thought and local wind fields that favour snow accumulation. Includes computer code for models of snow drift and sublimation of drifting particles.
