Record #196251:

City of the Sun on ice: the Soviet (counter-) discourse of the Arctic in the 1930s / Susi K. Frank.

Title: City of the Sun on ice: the Soviet (counter-) discourse of the Arctic in the 1930s / Susi K. Frank.
Author(s): Frank, Susi K.
Date: 2011.
Publisher: Newcastle upon Tyne: Cambridge Scholars
In: Arctic discourses. (2011.),
Abstract: Argues that Soviet Arctic discourse of 1930s should be understood as counter-discourse because it highlights narratives of consequent and final integration of this region into Soviet space, and also narratives which transform Arctic into integral part of Soviet space. Examines parameters necessary for conceptualizing Arctic: nature - in particular relationship between man and nature; man as hero; and space. Uses Russian literary and fictional texts with factographical claim and compares them with German and American texts.
