The CO₂ system in Arctic co\_astal waters / Elizabeth H. Shadwick, Helmuth Thomas.
Title: | The CO₂ system in Arctic co\_astal waters / Elizabeth H. Shadwick, Helmuth Thomas. |
Author(s): | Shadwick, Elizabeth H. Thomas, Helmuth. |
Date: | 2011. |
In: | LOICZ Inprint. (2011.), Vol. 1 (2011) |
Abstract: | Reports measurements of carbonate sys\_tem throughout Arctic Archipelago taken in September 2007 on east-to-west transect. Measurements are complemented by observations during year-round occupation of Amundsen Gulf from October 2007-August 2008. Finds that carbon characteristics of deep Atlantic-origin water in western region differ from those in eastern region, latter being influenced by outflow of Nares Strait and West Greenland Current. Seasonal variations of mixed-layer properties in Amundsen Gulf are strongly controlled by melting and formation of sea ice. Biological production by under-ice algae leads to uptake of inorganic carbon roughly two months before onset of ice-melt. Atmospheric CO₂ in Amundsen Gulf is largely driven by both under-ice and open-water biological production and subsequent export of organic matter to subsurface. |
