| Abstract: | Presents history of Russia's polar aviation from its beginnings in August 1945 to end of Second World War, with details of first air crews, and air force detachments and airlines created specifically for Russian Arctic and serving Northern Sea Route. Based on archives, some of which were until recently classified and "top secret". Chapter one covers pioneers of aviation both Russian and Western, and creation of Komsevmorput'. Chapter two focuses on Glavsevmorput' and its role in polar aviation and its objectives. Third chapter describes war years: lend-lease planes; North Pole drifting stations; Cold War; long-distance flights. |
