Abstract: Six biogeographic regions for hydrothermal vent communities are currently recognized (2002). ChEss aims to improve knowledge of deep-water chemosynthetically-driven ecosystems by promoting international discovery and exploration. Initial work has begun in Gakkel Ridge in eastern Arctic Basin, and on Haakon Mosby mud volcano on continental margin west of Barents Sea.
