Abstract: Presents unique collaborative approach of Census of Marine Life (CoML) to increasing knowledge of abundance, distribution, and diversity of marine life in worlds' oceans. Five-part research programme comprises: series of initial field projects; Ocean Biogeographic Information System giving single entry point for federation of databases; analysis of historical records through History of Marine Populations programme; work on advanced technology required to explore and document marine life; development of modelling approaches necessary to forecast changes in global biodiversity using Future of Marine Animal Populations programme.
